Kennel Cough

What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel Cough is a common, highly contagious respiratory infection similar to the common cold in humans. Even with the Kennel Cough Vaccine, dogs can still catch and spread Kennel Cough.

How is Kennel Cough Spread?

Kennel cough is spread through the air or through water - It can be caught anywhere there is more than one dog; Kennels, day care, play areas, local fields, the park or even at a fur friends house.

Dogs can also carry Kennel Cough without having any symptoms - It is therefore impossible for us to prevent Kennel Cough being brought into our Kennels.

What are the Symptoms?

Most cases, dogs with kennel cough will appear healthy other than the obvious symptom of a hacking type cough. This cough generally sounds like they have something stuck in their throat and can often produce mucus. Sneezing, feeling lethargic and possibly not having much of an appetite can also be signs.

Although it is a nuisance, kennel cough is not normally dangerous and wont need any treatment.

Although it is incredibly rare to see anything more than these symptoms, puppies, elderly dogs or those with other health concerns/taking medication should be monitored to ensure it doesn't cause other issues. If in doubt, your vet can offer advice.

  • Other than coughing, the infection is unlikely to make your dog feel unwell

  • Puppies, the elderly or those with underlying health concerns should be monitored.

  • Kennel Cough is a real nuisance but should get better without the need for treatment.

  • If ever in doubt, speak to your vet.

Our Kennel Protocol

All dogs must be vaccinated before they will be permitted into the kennels- This includes their usual boosters AND kennel cough at least 2 weeks prior to their stay. Your vaccination cards must be brought with you to each booking and will be held here during their stay.

All kennels are disinfected at least twice daily, no dogs share water bowls and all dogs are walked separately.

If any symptoms were to appear in the kennels during their stay, they would be isolated straight away and you will be notified. Collection as soon as possible will be required to try prevent it being passed to anyone else.

We will be upfront and honest with you if we have had any symptoms present here prior to your stay. If you wish to cancel your booking at this stage, you are more than welcome to do so.

We ask all customers to do the same for us - If your dog shows any symptoms within the 2 weeks prior to your stay, please let us know. We unfortunately would not be able to look after them but you will also not be responsible for passing it on to others. If you are unsure, please ask your vet.
